Oaks Design Pressed Metal Awning Panel

Oak Pressed Metal Awning PanelThe Oaks Panel used for Theatres as well as Awnings . It is a truly Art Deco design, featuring a series of raised triangular and diamond sections in the center of each panel which is bordered by longditudal bars.

It is based around a 24" square module and Wunderlite manufactures strips of these modules, (three to a sheet) in etch primed aluminum. The individual strips lap over each of their neighbors and are simply fixed by nailing to softwood battons. Like the Orpheum pattern, the Oaks design lends itself to long runs of awning and large areas of open ceilings as the pattern effectively breaks the pattern up into regular strips.

History

This pattern enjoyed a relatively short period of popularity from the late 1920's until the end of the 1930's while awning designs are affected by the Art Deco period which was cut short by the Second World War. In addition to street awnings, the Oaks pattern was rather extensively used in the lobby areas of theaters and movie houses which enjoyed a flourish in popularity and building with each suburb aspiring to such public facilities during the period immediately prior to the second World War.
